Partnering with the Holy Spirit In the book, The Spirit of the Disciplines, Dallas Willard presents some spiritual disciplines within the eleven chapters, an epilogue, and two appendixes. He titles Chapter Nine with, â€Å"Some main Disciplines for the Spiritual Life,† and begins the chapter by saying, â€Å"A discipline for the spiritual life is, when the dust of history is blown away, nothing but an activity undertaken to bring us into more effective cooperation with Christ and his Kingdom.† In the next section of the chapter, Willard asks the following questions, â€Å"What are the particular activities that can serve as disciplines for the spiritual life? And which should we choose for our individual strategy for spiritual growth?† To answer his own question, Willard poses that â€Å"we need not try to come up with a complete list of disciplines. Nor should we assume that practices will have a strong claim to be on every list.† Nevertheless, Willard does indeed list a few includi ng: solitude, silence, fasting, frugality, chastity, secrecy, sacrifice, study, worship, celebration, service, prayer, fellowship, confession and submission.
